birthday boy, tim

Came up to SF last Thursday to get ready for some Labor Day houseboating. Houseboating has become an annual tradition among my lake-loving friends, most of whom are now either Bay Area people or Oregonians. I missed the last couple of years because of my hectic schedule, but I made a comeback this year! The night before we headed off to Shasta Lake, I stayed at Stinky and Tim’s loft in SOMA. We were able to fit in a late evening birthday dinner for Tim at Commonwealth, where we had a great Chef’s Tasting Menu. The abalone & urchin dish was a divine little number, as were the other courses.  We closed out the evening (and the restaurant, I think) with an incredibly rich dessert (think fancy Snicker’s ice cream bar with “frozen popcorn” that went down like pure, melt-in-your-mouth butta), one of which came garnished with a birthday candle. The next morning, we packed up the car, picked up coffee to-go from Sightglass, and then headed to the East Bay to swoop up Ron-Til-Dawn for the 3 hour car ride to the lake. Shasta was AMAZING! Pics to come from Houseboat 2011…
